Resumen: The Inter-American investigation of mortality in childhood-which was carried out in 15 locations in the Americas over a two-year period, principally between mid-1968 and 1970 was planned to explore in depth the causes of excessive mortality in infancy and early childhood. It emphasized the study of the interrelationships of multiple causes of death and the associated environmental and biological factors. Special attention was directed to the study of nutritional deficiencies and their impact on survival of young children. Thirteen projects of the investigation were located in eight countries of Latin America, one was in an area around San Francisco in the state of California in the United States of America and one was in the southeastern part of Quebec province in Canada
