Stonier (born 1905) was educated at Westminster and at Christ Church (1923-27) where he read philosophy, politics and economics (PPE). He was appointed a senior scholarship for research in 1929, and in the early 1930s went on to Heidelberg for a PhD (1934). He was a temporary lecturer in political economy at University College, London (1936-38), then professor of economics at the University College of East Africa in Makerere, Uganda.
