Education: Millfield School, Street, Somerset (crammer student). Magdalen College, Oxford (1947–50), Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) MA. National Service (1953–1955): Second Lieutenant in the British Intelligence Corps. Six months spent as second in command of 902 Field Security Section in Hamburg, with a further year on the Allied Staff in Berlin.
