Resumen: The social and economic transformation of the last several decades have led to profound demographic and epidemiological changes in many developing countries. Increases in the importance of non-communicable diseases and injuries affecting primarily adults and the elderly pose new disease control challenges for health systems that must simultaneously address problems of infectious diseases. This study of adult health in Chile analyzes recent and projected demographic and epidemiological trends and their implications for health care expenditures and intervention programs, including strategies for managing medical technology and containing the escalation of health care costs.
