These volumes were the product of a project exploring a new approach to the collection and analysis of information on socioeconomic progress in developing countries. The prevailing macro approach tended to operate in terms of national abstractions, remote from local reality. These publications report on a new methodology which allowed distributional data that take into account local needs and aspirations to be obtained, analyzed and reported to central and local planning and policy organs.
