The World Bank ' s environmental work is changing its emphasis from the design and codification of Bank policies to supporting their implementation; a stronger focus on the development of institutional capacity for environmental management at the country level; a greater recognition of the need to include environmental concerns into sectoral work; and an increased emphasis on the social aspects of environmentally sustainable development. This report sets out the principal environmental activities of the Bank during 1993 and its future initiatives. It is designed to document progress and ensure that the lesson of success and failure are put to good use.
